Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common and potentially serious sleep disorder that affects tens of millions of Americans, with many of them never receiving a proper diagnosis. This sleep disorder is characterized by frequent breathing cessations during sleep. If left untreated, OSA can lead to chronic fatigue, hypertension and stroke. One of the tell-tale signs of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring, which can become more prevalent with age. OSA occurs when the muscles that support the soft tissues in the throat temporarily relax, causing the airway to narrow or close, wherein breathing is temporarily cut off.
In addition to the more overtly dangerous symptoms of sleep apnea, the disruption of normal sleep patterns that come with this condition can be very harmful to the body. Proper sleep provides the body with vital physical and mental rest and allows for a variety of repair and regenerative processes to take place. If the body is deprived of the sleep it needs, there can be significant and wide-ranging negative effects.
Oral appliance therapy has been proven very effective in treating snoring and mild to moderate forms of sleep apnea. This therapy involves the use of special dental and orthodontic appliances which are designed to correct the positioning of the mouth and throat during sleep.
Oral appliance therapy is also often a good alternative for people who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine, which is a more aggressive type of sleep apnea treatment.
