Emergency Dental Care

At Mapleridge Children and Adult Dentistry, Dr. Charu Saini and our experienced professionals utilize state-of-the-art equipment and time-tested methods of dental care to give residents of Liverpool and surrounding communities a positive, efficient experience in the dentist’s chair. As longtime leaders in Liverpool NY family dentistry, we sometimes field questions from patients about emergency dental care and what exactly warrants a call to our office. From chipped or broken teeth to tooth aches and pains, here’s a look at common dental problems, and how to help alleviate them.

Severe Toothaches

If you’re suffering from severe tooth pain, try cleaning the affected area extremely well by first rinsing your mouth to try and remove any stuffed food particles. If swelling occurs, try using a cold compress. You can also take over-the-counter pain medications to help pain subside in the short-term.

Broken, Chipped, or Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth is completely broken, rinse the area right away using warm salt water. If the tooth is only chipped, apply a cold compress to the affected area and try and recover any missing materials, if possible, before calling our office.

If you’ve knocked out a permanent tooth, hold it by the crown and then rinse it while taking care to handle it as little as possible. Call our office immediately, and then hold it in its proper place in your mouth using gauze until you can come in.

Abscessed Teeth

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection that occurs either at the tooth’s root or near the gum line. It can be caused by a number of situations, among them tooth decay, tooth trauma, or gum disease. Depending on the severity of the infection, it may need to be professionally drained. In especially severe cases, root surgery may be needed.

To minimize discomfort at home, try an over-the-counter pain medication and rinse the affected area thoroughly with warm salt water.
