Dental emergencies often occur at the most unexpected and inconvenient times, but not all dentists are able and willing to accept patients after hours. At Mapleridge Children and Adult Dentistry, we pride ourselves in offering emergency dental care when you need it most. Dr. Charu Saini is a compassionate children’s dentist in Liverpool who knows how to give you the help you need whether your child is suffering from a severe toothache or gets a tooth knocked out while playing with friends. Here are some common dental problems that may warrant a visit to an emergency dentist in Liverpool.
If your child experiences severe tooth pain after hours, try to identify the source of the problem. There could be food particles stuck between the teeth. If the gum tissue in the area is swollen and removing food particles doesn’t help, there could be an abscess causing inflammation and discomfort. There are a variety of situations that can lead to abscesses, including:
Over-the-counter pain medication may help alleviate some of your child’s discomfort while you wait for your emergency dental appointment. Rinsing the area with warm salt water may also help bring your child some relief.
If one of your child’s baby teeth gets entirely knocked out of his or her mouth, you should use warm (not hot) salt water to gently rinse out the area before calling our practice for an emergency dental appointment. If the knocked out tooth is a permanent one, carefully rinse it off then hold it onto the empty tooth socket with gauze until you can make it into the office. Be sure to handle the tooth only by the crown, if possible, to avoid getting bacteria on the part that makes contact with the gum tissue.
If you or our child chip a tooth, you can help relieve pain by gently placing a cold compress on the affected area to alleviate swelling and discomfort. If you can find the portion of the tooth that has chipped off, carefully put it in a baggie and bring it to our office with you.
